Call For Submissions: October/November 2023

The Gender Exploration Carnival is one of several blogging carnivals – an event where a host blog puts out a theme for the month, participants create content and share the links with the host, and the host posts a round-up at the end of the month. For more information, you can check out the FAQ page.

I’m self-hosting the Gender Exploration Carnival with the theme of “Mourning” for October and November of 2023. The following prompts are merely suggestions, and you are not required to answer one question (or all of them) in order to participate as long as your submission is connected to the theme.

Suggested questions:

  • Self-mourning: This could be a possible benefit to letting yourself mourn an old and potentially outdated version of yourself, or this could be reacting to others mourning your former self.
  • Family mourning: Does your family and/or culture have any gender differences in mourning activities?
  • Community mourning: If you’d like to talk about personally or communally important means of mourning and memorializing the dead.
  • Other: If you don’t want to talk about such a personal topic, you can revisit the theme TDOR for the Trans Day of Remembrance.

The deadline for submissions is 2 am EST [UTC-5] on 1 December 2023. I will post the round-up around 5 pm on 1 December and will accept late submissions until then. You can submit an anonymous entry for this month by emailing genderexplorationcarnival@pm.me (the post will be self-hosted here on WordPress), or you can leave a link to your submission in a comment on this post. There is a corresponding Call for Submissions on Pillowfort. If you have an idea for a theme and would like to host, please leave a comment on Volunteer As Host.

Round Up: August/September 2023

The theme for August and September of 2023 was “Sports.” I received the following submission:

Isaac – “Physical Education: the fetish of fascist and military dictatorships

When I think of Physical Education I can’t help thinking of Primo de Rivera, both the father and the son, the military dictator and the fascist ideologist, respectively. It was their fetish and it lasts until our days with no relevant modification by the aid of Franco’s dictatorship who continued both lines.

Unofficially, I couldn’t help but hear about the FIDE announcing a new policy on transgender chess players around the 21st of August, and as someone who isn’t involved in chess, I appreciated an explanation of why chess has women’s tournaments and how all trans chess players would be affected in terms of ranking (as this policy doesn’t just affect certain specific or high level tournaments).

If you tried to submit something but don’t see your submission here, please let me know, and I’ll update the post. You can email genderexplorationcarnival@pm.me, comment on this post, or reach out via the Contact page. If you’d like to host for October/November 2023, please leave a comment on the Volunteer As Host post by the 7th.
